Over the last year, I have had a rough time when it comes to earning money and employment. Here is my situation, around this time last year, I was working as a custodian at the Snohomish Publishing Company, a shopping cart ad installer, a part time sales person at kohl's, and a part time demonstrator at New Concepts in Marketing. However, at the time, the 4 job schedule seemed to be a bit too much for me, and so I ended up dropping the ad cart installation job to free up my schedule a bit and keep the other three jobs. I was with voc rehab at the time (since I do have disabilities, which makes it harder to get and keep jobs than normal), and around June last year, on the advice on my job coach, I dropped the Snohomish Publishing job as well, with the idea that I could get more hours that way (along with joining the ad set team, which one of my supervisors was pressuring me to do). And so, I went that route, and at first it worked out, but then it ended up backfiring.
First, I was put on ad set team on 2 different occasions, and perhaps I was not fast enough for them or something, but my scheduler did not seem to be interested in assigning me to the ad set team, and so I ended working almost exclusively in the men's department instead, and after the holiday season ended, they cut my hours so that usually I am not working more than 10 hours a week on average (back during the 4 job schedule, I almost never got less than 20 hours worth of work each weeek), and so now here I am looking for a new side job or a all new job altogether. I've tried affiliate marketing (which is a form of internet marketing where you build a website and promote stuff for various merchants and companies, such as ebooks, games, etc), along with 2 mlms: GDI and the Spider Web System, but they are commission based, and have had no luck whatsoever in earning commissions. On top of that, I do have financial responsibilities like student loans, car insurance, and car expenses as well, and it is hard to keep up on all of them with my current job situation. I have tried several things though:
- I still do NCIM (which is the job that does demos at QFC stores on weekends), but I only get one demo every several months on average lately, and so that job does not seem to be real profitable for me.
- I was hired by Driveline retail as a part time merchandiser, and my boss there seemed to be interested in putting me to work almost immediately. I was hired and she assigned me 3 jobs about a week later (last month), and I don't know if my performace was bad or if the demand for merchandisers is low (obviously if you are new on a job, managers should not expect you to be on your best performance anyways on your first few tries, especially if it is something new, like working with planograms), but after that week, she hasn't had any jobs for me lately. I even try to take jobs she puts up on email for everybody to respond to, but don't get a response from her, and so I am not sure if that is really going to be a viable route.
- Next, I almost got hired with a company called, TRG field solutions, which is an affiliate of Verizon and sells the Verizon fios system, and if I got the job, I would have been doing door to door sales, and while I did make it to the orientation day, the jobs I have at Kohl's and NCIM part time kept me from keeping that job. Basically, I tried to remind my would be boss about Kohl's and NCIM (tried to make it clear that I was still working part time for Kohl's and NCIM on the application and resume), but he was not willing to accomodate my two other jobs and let me go on the spot (basically, he wanted me to be able to work 10 am to 6 pm every day from Monday through Saturday, and drop my other 2 jobs to keep the TRG job). The only way I would have been able to stay with TRG would have been to drop both Kohl's and NCIM jobs, but at TRG, they only pay on a commission basis, which means that I would only earn money for what I sell, and since I don't have enough successful experience with commission sales jobs (such as affiliate marketing/GDI), I was uncomfortable about going with a commission sales job alone (it is one of those things where you have to look before you leap, obviously if I got good with those and was able to make significantly more money than I do at Kohl's/NCIM, such as $10,000 a month or more, then commission sales jobs are the way to go, but normally commissions do not come right away from my experience, especially if you are new and don't generate sales or leads right away).
So, that is the situation of mine now, I still do affiliate marketing and while I have recently finished putting together my website, it will probably be a while before I make any real money with it, as people are only starting to discover my site and don't know me very well. I think ideally, I need to get something that I can work around my other two jobs with and can earn decent money and get new skills while doing so. That is my spew for now.
